Pavo GrassSeed horse pasture grass seeds – seed mixture specially developed for horse pastures

The horse's basic diet consists of grass. The pastureland in Germany is generally sown with the grass mixture BG11, which is aimed at cattle needs. This “usual” grass mixture is characterized by a very high proportion of English ryegrass of a modern type that grows very quickly (intensive pasture) and has a high protein content (for high-protein milk).

This grass mixture is significantly less suitable for horses because horses consume too much protein (nitrogen). They have a need for textured grass. In addition, conventional grass is poorly adapted to the horses' eating behavior (very short grazing). Unlike horses, cows tear off grass with their tongues, leaving the blade of grass standing long enough. Because the growing point of common English ryegrass is a little above the ground, it can easily grow back after cows have grazed it. However, when horses graze such a pasture, it is difficult for the standard grasses to grow again. In addition, grass pastures of type BG11 have a high nitrogen requirement (i.e. a lot of fertilizer is required), which is less desirable for horse pastures.

Recommended use:
Horse pastures can be sown from April to September, although the hot summer months are less suitable. When sowing, you should stick to the recommendation of 45 kg - 60 kg of grass mixture per hectare. Furthermore, it should be taken into account that a higher seed rate is necessary for wide-spread sowing or when sowing very small plots (i.e. approx. 60 kg/ha).

It is best to have Pavo grass seeds sown by an agricultural expert (e.g. farmer, contractor). A professional can best determine how seedbed preparation and sowing should be done because they know the soil in your area.

Hot spots, molehills and frost damage cause open spots. You can fill them with good grass by over-seeding or through-seeding. To do this, mow the grass first before loosening the ground with a harrow, drag or rake. Sowing can then be done by hand or with a fertilizer spreader. Finally, the land is rolled.

Sowing should be carried out by an expert (e.g. farmer, contractor). The best times for over- or through-sowing are February and March and mid-August to mid-October. Depending on the condition of the pasture, 20 kg - 30 kg of horse grass seed is required.

Composition of the seed mixture for horse pastures:

• Four different English ryegrasses of the old type (20% Cadans ryegrass, 20% Orantas ryegrass, 15% Boulevard ryegrass, 5% Bizet ryegrass

• 10% red wine

• 12% meadow bluegrass

• 15% Timothy grass

• Herbal mixture with 1.5% boxhorn clover, 0.4% wild carrot, 0.4% parsley, 0.4% common grass and 0.3% ribwort plantain
